2019 Head of the Cuyahoga Photo Gallery

The Cuyahoga River’s hard-working waterfront provided a great backdrop for Cleveland Rowing Foundation’s annual Head of the Cuyahoga Regatta, a 3.1 mile rowing race that drew close to 2,000 athletes to Cleveland on Saturday. The Cuyahoga’s curvy course places a premium on taking a proper line through four large turns and local rowers used that knowledge to their advantage.

Many thanks to the race volunteers, Cuyahoga River stakeholders, and safety personnel who helped ensure a fun day on the river. It’s a fitting end to the summer that commemorated the 50th anniversary of the 1969 Cuyahoga River fire. The HOTC Regatta is a great reflection on the comeback Cuyahoga (and Cleveland).

A BIG Weekend for Cleveland's Waterfront (photos and video).

A BIG Weekend for Cleveland's Waterfront (photos and video).

It seemed there was something going on along every piece of Cleveland’s waterfront this past weekend with:

  • The Tall Ships Festival Parade of Sail kicking off affairs on Thursday afternoon.

  • An open water swim at Edgewater Park hosted by North Coast Multisports that served as a tune-up for the USA Triathlon Age Group National Championships returning to Cleveland August 9-10.

  • An SUP Yoga session with SUP CLE at Wendy Park.

  • A birds-eye view of recreational kayaks interacting with the freighter Sam Laud as it transited the lower Cuyahoga River (more on that in a future post).

Blazing Paddles Paddleboard Race Stokes the Cuyahoga River

Our goal for Blazing Paddles was to reframe the Cuyahoga River narrative and we were so pleased media picked up on a paddleboarding race as a perspective-changer for recreational use of a river that formerly served as a cultural reference point for environmental ruin.

Happy 60th Anniversary Goodtime III

Happy 60th Anniversary Goodtime III

Last night's cruise on the Goodtime III reminded us of the old line about a busman's holiday: A holiday in which you spend most of your time doing the same or something very similar to your normal work. Ostensibly we were guests of the Goodtime III's 60th Anniversary Cruise along Lake Erie and the Cuyahoga River.

Things We're Thankful For

Things We're Thankful For

Thanksgiving provides a wonderful time for family and friends to gather and celebrate a modern "harvest" together. It's also a time that allows people the opportunity to consider the many things we have to be thankful for. In that spirit, we wanted to reflect on the many things (in no particular order) we're thankful for with regards to Cleveland's waterfront.

Critical YAK on the Cuyahoga River

Last Friday we caught up with the inaugural Critical YAK, an informal aquatic gathering where kayakers put in at Cleveland Metroparks' Merwin's Wharf dock, paddled 1.7 miles down the Cuyahoga River out to Lake Erie, hung a left and beached at Wendy Park for some fun at Whiskey Island Still and Eatery before returning to Merwin's Wharf.

The Cuyahoga River Becomes a Racetrack This Saturday

It's a unique day on the river as it's the one day the U.S. Coast Guard establishes a temporary safety zone (from 7 a.m. to 4 p.m.) on the Federal Navigation Channel, restricting vessels from an area below Nautica Entertainment Complex up to the turning basin by ArcelorMittal.
