Blazing Paddles Paddlefest delivers an immersive and authentic experience on Cleveland's Cuyahoga River on Sunday, September 15, 2024.
Due to our postponement, the entire Blazing Paddles Paddlefest program (including the Pre-Paddle and After=Paddle Expo presented by Bedrock) will be on one day. (there will be no “day-before” check-in, boat & board drop off).
Traditions are being kept and memories are being made at our sixth annual celebration of Cleveland’s hardworking, scenic, and historic Cuyahoga River. Blazing Paddles Paddlefest will also serve as an on-the-water farewell salute to the Eagle Ave. Bridge (Cleveland's first lift bridge (1931)) that will be disassembled over the upcoming winter.
Eagle Ave Bridge is part of the unsourced factoid "Within one mile of the Center St. Swing Bridge Cleveland has more bridge designs than any other place in the world."
Thanks to our loyal and enthusiastic paddlers for a great day on the river. We’ll see you at the 7th annual Blazing Paddles Paddlefest on July 18-19, 2025!
The Sixth Annual Blazing Paddles Paddlefest is a celebration of Cleveland’s hardworking, scenic, and historic Cuyahoga River. In partnership with the Cuyahoga River Safety Task Force, industrial stakeholders, affiliate organizations, Cuyahoga River Water Trail partners, North Coast Multisports, and Blazing Paddles Paddlefest sponsors, Share the River is providing two opportunities to enjoy Blazing Paddles Paddlefest. Please note we have modified our course from previous years (removing the upper “industrial segment” leading to Cleveland-Cliffs).
You can enjoy a relaxed paddle journey of the historic and scenic Cuyahoga River where the Dave Vasarhelyi Memorial Recreational Paddle & Float will take you on a curvy, 6.1 (1 lap) or 12.2 mile (2 laps) urban waterfront journey that flows past a unique mix of bridges and riverfront sites where iconic pyramids of sand and stone stand in contrast to paved paths and greenspaces. At the Main Ave. Bridge turnaround, Cleveland Fire Department’s Garrett A. Morgan fireboat will greet paddlers with a water cannon salute! (Get map).
You can race Cleveland’s hard-working waterfront over one of three race distances (3.75, 6.1 & 12.2-miles).
Paddlers will depart/recover from Cleveland Metroparks’ Merwin’s Wharf docks at Rivergate Park (g). There will be no put-in or take-out at Cleveland Rowing Foundation docks. Paddlers will enjoy exclusive access to the Cuyahoga River for 4 1/2 hours to enjoy a morning of industrial strength fun:
PLEASE register early. Kayak rentals are still available. We will have one put-in and take-out site at Rivergate Park/Cleveland Metroparks Merwin’s Wharf. Pre-registration closes on September 14, 2024. Same day registration will be subject to a $40.00 convenience fee. All proceeds will go to support our "We Paddle the City" program.
all preregistered paddlers who have not edited their registration for our postponed June 22 paddle have been rolled over to the September 15 paddle.
If you have a question during Blazing Paddles Paddlefest week, please e-mail us directly so we can track your ask. Please do not ask questions via our social channels as doing so may result in a delayed reply.

Delivering on our commitment to diversity and inclusion by providing historically marginalized communities the opportunity to safely recreate on the Cuyahoga River and Lake Erie via our ongoing “We Paddle the City” efforts.

Racers and recreational paddlers should respect the buffer zone between the two events. All racers and recreational paddlers need to stay “river right”, especially on the downstream leg of the paddle through the u-turn before the Main Ave. Bridge (where Cleveland Fire’s Garrett A. Morgan fireboat will be) and past Merwin’s Wharf. All paddlers should review & memorize the course map (print it out right NOW and review it for a couple of days) for your respective event. A safe and smooth day for everyone on the river depends upon you taking this simple precautionary step.
Check out this “ten tips for kayaking in hot weather” blog post!. Bring at least two water bottles for your paddle!
All paddlers need to pass river right of the buoys located at:
Stay right buoy at Superior Bend/Jacobs Pavilion
.76 mile u-turn buoy at Main Ave. Bridge

The u-turn buoy at Marathon Bend. (for 6.1 mile, 12.2 mile race and for Dave Vasarhelyi Memorial)

When finishing, racers should finish close to the edge of the Merwin’s Wharf dock, making it easier for spotters to identify you.
Note: Recreational Paddlers (Dave Vasarhelyi Memorial) will hold their position between the Columbus Road Bridge and Merwin’s Wharf until the racers have passed on their upriver leg. Once the racers have passed, the Dave Vasarhelyi Memorial will start, heading downriver to the Main Ave. Bridge u-turn.

Burning the Cuyahoga River Narrative
Blazing Paddles is intended to provide a focus on several themes central to Share the River's mission
the importance and demonstrable positive impact of common sense environmental regulations and the value of public investments in stormwater infrastructure (like NEORSD's Project Clean Lake).
the positive impact of engaged, long-term recreational use and stewardship of our nations rivers and waterways.
the benefit the above three have on waterfront cities' appeal 1) as a place where people want to work, live and play in and 2) as a tourism destination.
Blazing Paddles is the annual recreational celebration of the comeback Cuyahoga River. Check out this video to see what was done to revitalize the river from its low point in 1969. “As people from both sides of the river come down to know it, they start to love it. That is what we need going forward.”
