60 Photographs From a Cuyahoga River & Lake Erie Ride Along with Saint Ignatius High School Crew

A beautiful October afternoon greeted us for our ride along this week with Saint Ignatius High School's varsity eight. The team was coming off a successful Head of the Ohio regatta in Pittsburgh last weekend and the day's workout was a long (10 1/2 mile) steady state row. Assistant coach Russ Eckles' experienced eye watched the young athletes and gave feedback to the team as they rowed from the Cleveland Rowing Foundation Boathouse, down the Cuyahoga River to Lake Erie, out past Burke Lakefront Airport and back for a short leg on the old river bed before returning home.

The view of Cleveland's waterfront from the coaches launch was a reminder of the progress that's been made and the potential that remains for future development. Fall has slowed the river's pulse as hot spots like Coastal Taco had seating available on its large deck while Alley Cat Oyster Bar tables beckoned post-work diners.

The team stayed well out of the way of the 650 foot long freighter Federal Champlain as it backed out of the Port of Cleveland, and made its turnaround within sight of the East breakwall repairs being completed by the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers. A quick down and back on the old riverbed provided a great reminder of some of the most unique vistas of Cleveland before the team headed back home after a long afternoon on the water.

Take a trip with us and enjoy Cleveland's waterfront view!
