Cleveland's Waterfront is Open for Business, Have Fun and Be Safe! - Press Conference
/With the NFL Draft in the rear-view mirror, Cleveland’s waterfront is open for business and given the year-long surge in Cuyahoga River recreation, members of the Cuyahoga River Safety Task Force, law enforcement agencies, maritime & recreational stakeholders, and Cleveland waterfront businesses will participate in a press conference and media mixer convened by Share the River at Collision Bend Brewing Co. (1250 Old River Rd. Cleveland, OH 44113) on Wednesday, May 26 at 11:30 a.m. There will be prepared remarks from eight stakeholders and a Q&A session. The invite only event (COVID protocols) coincides with National Safe Boating Week (May 21-28, 2021) and we need your help with the photo-op!
The press conference is well timed as Memorial Day weekend is the unofficial beginning of summer and the traditional start of the recreational boating season. Safety of river users, whether recreational or commercial, remains a top priority for everyone. The Cuyahoga River is experiencing a rising tide of recreational paddlers given the:
Continued surge in interest in paddle-sports during the pandemic
Increasing appeal of the 19-month-old Cuyahoga River Water Trail
Cuyahoga River winning the USA Today 10 Best “Best Urban Kayaking Spot” vote.
If you’re a regular recreational user of the Cuyahoga River, it’s no surprise to you how the river is experiencing increased demand and there is a need to remind folks while they are having fun, to keep some common sense guidelines in mind to ensure a safe day on the river. You’re also part of Cleveland’s waterfront brand as photos of people having fun ON the Cuyahoga River tells a LARGE story about Cleveland’s comeback Cuyahoga River. NOTHING triggers us more than seeing a story on Cleveland’s resurgence illustrated by a beautiful photo…with no people on the river.

How can you help with tomorrow’s press conference? We’re asking recreational users to be part of the press conference backdrop by paddling or boating by Collision Bend Brewing Co.’s outdoor patio from 11:15 am - 12:15 pm. For example, when the TODAY show opens, you know how you see a ton of people waving in the background? That’s what we’re looking for during tomorrow’s press conference. Paddlers can put-in at nearby Great Lakes Watersports (map) for a nominal $5 charge/tip. Their staff will take your board/kayak from shore to water and vice versa (all tips go to the employee’s college fund tip jar). Free parking is very close at Nautica Waterfront District (map). Or if you’d like to enjoy a longer paddle., Cleveland Metroparks’ Merwin’s Wharf dock is open.
Please keep an eye on the weather. While the Cuyahoga River press conference is a rain or shine event, we want to make sure YOU have a safe time ON the Cuyahoga River! See you tomorrow and thanks in advance for the cameo! Also, stay tuned for an exciting announcement on the return of Blazing Paddles to Cleveland’s comeback Cuyahoga River!
