Slow River Episode 8: Sculler Shimmer on the Old Cuyahoga River Channel

This week’s Slow River episode is a short one. In September 2015 we had the pleasure of collaborating on an amazing project with visual storytellers Ben Harper and Christopher Cymbalak at Breakwall Media. We caught Ben and Chris filming a segment with Sheila Nowacki, a Western Reserve Rowing Association sculler rowing out of the Cleveland Rowing Foundation Boathouse. The sunrise shimmer of the Cleveland skyline as the launch’s gentle wake made its way across the Cuyahoga’s old river channel was a thing of beauty.

More on Breakwall Media’s resulting Emmy Award winning short film UNBIDDEN below.

UNBIDDEN is an Emmy Award-winning short film directed, shot and edited by Christopher Cymbalak and Ben Harper on location in Cleveland, Ohio. The docu-narrative tells the story of a U.S. soldier's letters to his mother while serving in Iraq and how rowing has helped her cope with his death in 2005 from a roadside bomb. Her desire to keep his memory alive led to the creation of the Andy Nowacki Memorial Scholarship Fund, which sponsors individuals in Northeast Ohio training to become police and safety officers.
